Lawyers Like You Are Struggling To Find Balance
Time and time again, I’ve heard the same stories of burnout from every lawyer I’ve worked with. When I ask them about what they’re struggling with, they tell me a story that goes something like this:
“I’m good at my job but the rest of my life is a disaster. I work hard all day and I can’t wait to get home at the end of it but when I do, I’m constantly fighting with my spouse and we end up disconnected. Every time I think I’m going to catch a break, my career demands more from me and at this point, I’ve lost sight of who I am. I never have time for my hobbies, my friends, or even my own health. Most days I feel like I’m treading water, just trying to survive the stress, anxiety, and exhaustion”.
There is something so uniquely challenging about being an attorney in the modern era.
There’s the constant pressure of more billable hours, to please clients, to win cases. But also to have a life outside with a family, friends and kids, and to do it seamlessly. The reality is that it’s not that easy. Some days, it seems like it’s not possible at all.
Law school taught you a lot but it didn’t teach you the skills to balance all of the pressures you would encounter. It didn’t teach you how to be a great lawyer AND how to still have a full and meaningful life of your making.
I’ve often wondered why lawyers suffer so much and the answer seems to be straightforward. It’s because you are highly intelligent people who are used to being able to accomplish anything you put your minds to. You don’t take no for an answer and you don’t want to settle for second best.
But managing your internal experience of the world doesn’t work the way the rest of the world works; the tools you normally use to master your environment don’t apply and that never-ending challenge can feel like failure. After all, you can’t win at what you don’t properly understand.
Wouldn’t it be great if there was a way for you to be as successful in your personal life as you are in your professional life? Wouldn’t it be great if you didn’t have to grind through the rest of your life but could thrive through it?
And wouldn’t it be great if there was a way you could learn all of this on your own time; after all, your schedule is so busy?
